I would appreciate a statement from the American Pro-Choice community supporting, condemning or deftly equivocating on the Indian practice of using abortion to achieve sexual selection. Unicef reported the “misuse of advance pre-natal diagnostic techniques has led to sex selection with the widespread termination of female fetuses”. Approximately ten million in the last twenty years.
Condemned by the Indian Prime Minister as a “national shame”, he went on “inhuman, uncivilized, reprehensible”, “no nation can claim to be part of the civilized world if it condones the practice of discriminating against half of humanity represented by women”.
Might the exercise in expedience be considered a sub-set of genocide (gender based)?
Female children are considered a financial liability, male children a long term asset. The decision to abort is altogether practical (in India and elsewhere) it’s never personal, fetuses being not persons.
