Too much of a good thing

April 23, 2008

Does the world need billions of technically impeccable snapshots, capturing moments of enduring insignificance? Are we not putting at risk a cultural artifact whose small imperfections were part of their charm? Will talent and technique be eclipsed by a self perfecting technology?

None of these questions were posed or suggested in a review of three new digital cameras (all quite affordable and unnecessary) that were capable of detecting a smile or improving one (though not yet reliably).

I’d like to say a word in defense of a slightly out of focus, off center, a bit dark, occasionally decapitated, thumb over the lens, you forgot the film you idiot category of human failing that is essential to our humor and humility.
